Indirect evaporative cooling and heat recovery technology

The OXYCELL® is a high efficiency heat exchanger configured as an indirect evaporative cooler – indirectly cooling outdoor air using water as a refrigerant. The technology is modelled after nature – in the heat of summer a film of perspiration forms on the surface of the skin. As it evaporates energy is removed from the body cooling it down.

The patented evaporative media is designed for maximum heat transfer and evaporation. Its superior performance allows for compact ventilation/heat recovery/cooling systems maximizing energy efficiency and indoor air quality.

 

Three OXYCELL application modes

When used in the IEC mode, the OXYCELL® functions as a counter-flow indirect evaporative heat exchanger in which air in the secondary channel (work air) is adiabatically cooled, hereby extracting heat from air in the primary channel (process air). In practice, primary air cools down to within a degree above the physical limit, i.e. the wet bulb temperature of the secondary inlet air, while maintaining a constant absolute humidity.

When used in the DPC mode, the OXYCELL® functions as a counter-flow dew point cooler, in fact a special application of the OXYCELL® in the IEC mode, in which part of the cooled primary air (typically 35-40%) is branched off and used as secondary inlet air, where it is cooled adiabatically, hereby extracting heat from the primary air stream. Ideally, primary air can be cooled down to its dew point temperature, while maintaining a constant absolute humidity.

When used in the HR mode, the OXYCELL® functions as a counter-flow heat recovery exchanger, in which the temperature of cold outdoor air (primary channel) is raised by extracting heat from the warm return air (secondary channel).

In 2011 Bright Green Cities selected OXYCOM’s OXYCELL® technology as one of the world’s most important initiatives that are greening the world. These initiatives have been published in the Bright Green Book which was officially presented at the Rio Global Green Business CleanTech Conference held in Rio de Janeiro June 1-3, 2011. This conference served as the starting point of collaboration between all sectors in preparation of the UN Conference RIO 2012.
